The National Book Awards culminated last night at the Yuchengco Museum. All five of Adarna House’s storybooks released last year made it to the nominee list, with four finalists to the Juan C. Laya Prize for Best Children’s Fiction, and two to the category for Best Design.
The Boy Who Touched Heaven, a book produced in partnership with CANVAS, won the award for Best Children’s Fiction. The story, written by Iris Gem Li, was translated into the vernacular by poet Roberto Añonuevo and illustrated by Sergio Bumatay III.
Dalawang Bayani ng Bansa (authored by the late Rene O. Villanueva, illustrated by Joel Jason Chua), also nominated to the Best Children’s Fiction category, is a storybook on the closely intertwined lives of the nation’s beloved heroes, Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio. The mathematics storybooks penned by Russell Molina got nods as well, with Sampu Pataas, Sampu Pababa (illustrated by Conrad Raquel) nominated for the same category, and Lola Puti (illustrated by Vanessa Tamayo) named a finalist for Best Design.
Tight Times, a story about a family with a need to tighten their belts, was nominated for both Best Design and Best Children’s Fiction — and not too surprisingly, with author Jeanette Patindol’s two wins at the PBBY-Salanga and illustrator Sergio Bumatay III’s two wins as well at the PBBY-Alcala.
Congratulations to everyone! |
